Since the enactment of the ADA, there has been a need for another type of vertical transportation. A process was started to define what became a Limited Use/Limited Application (LU/LA) elevator

LU/LA elevators in general were created to fill the void between the commercial elevator and the vertical platform (wheelchair) lift. Some typical applications are schools, libraries, small businesses, churches and multifamily housing.

Some of the greatest challenges that face architects and specification writers today include meeting the necessary code requirements, budgetary constraints and space limitations that can be present in new and alteration construction.
